Two pretty dinner plates decorated with a hand-painted on transfer design of floral sprays on a cream ground. Painted in green to the rims. These items were manufactured towards the end of the Art Dec period.
The Arthur J Wilkinson pottery, trading as Royal Staffordshire, opened in 1885 in Burselm and was a very significant factory which would include Clarice Cliff as a designer.
She joined the company in 1916 at the age of just 17 and went on to marry one of the directors Colley Shorter. She was made Art Director of AJ Wilkinson and Newport Pottery in 1930 where she and Colley Shorter worked on creating awareness of her Bizarre ware.

One plate has clean underglaze crazing. Stacking marks. No chips or cracks.
Backstamp in use 1940s. Painter's mark. Impressed mark.
Will make a beautiful display.
