This superb Serving Bowl carries the long-retired pattern Apple Blossom, which is becoming harder to find. The name Athena refers to the fluted body shape. The top rim is decorated in a pale shade of blue-green. Towards the bottom of the bowl is a silver gilt ring.
Johnson Brothers, Hanley - one of the Staffordshire potteries - began production in 1883.
Four grandsons of the Master potter, Alfred Meakin, were eventually involved in the company : Alfred, Frederick, Henry and Robert. The firm joined the Wedgwood group in 1968.
