This gorgeous floral milk jug and sugar bowl by Copeland Spode were made exclusively for the world-famous furniture maker and retailer Waring & Gillow Ltd, London.
Hand-painted on transfer with floral sprays on a pure white ground. Gilded rims and handle.
Gillow's of Lancaster can be traced back to the luxury furniture and furnishings firm founded by Robert Gillow c.1730. In 1764 a London branch of Gillow's was established at 176 Oxford Road, now Oxford Street and rapidly established a reputation for supplying high-quality furniture. It furnished the greatest houses and luxury yachts of the era.
The Waring & Gillow building at 164-188 Oxford Street was erected in 1905-06 in a style inspired by Hampton Court Palace. The building is now the flagship H&M store. The name Waring & Gillow was lost to cabinet makers Maple & Co in 1980.
