Two pretty floral plates by Copeland Spode which were made exclusively for the world-famous furniture maker and retailer, Waring & Gillow Ltd, London.
Hand-painted on transfer with floral sprays on a pure white ground. Gilded rims.
The plates could be used as dinner or salad plates or equally well as serving plates.
Gillow's of Lancaster can be traced back to the luxury furniture and furnishings firm founded by Robert Gillow c.1730. In 1764 a London branch of Gillow's was established at 176 Oxford Road, now Oxford Street. It furnished the greatest houses and luxury yachts of the era.
The Waring & Gillow building at 164-188 Oxford Street was erected in 1905-06 in a style inspired by Hampton Court Palace. The building is now the flagship H&M store. The name Waring & Gillow was lost to cabinet makers Maple & Co in 1980.
A small flake to the edge of one of the plates is mentioned for completeness - otherwise in excellent vintage condition.
