Information

Hand-painted on transfer, these four mid-century classic Hedgerow patterned dinner plates by Alfred Meakin, feature brambles, leaves and grasses and were designed in the 1950s and manufactured until the late 1960s.

Alfred Meakin (1848-1904) was the youngest son of the famous potter James Meakin who had fours sons, all potters - James Meakin born 1830, George Meakin born 1832, Charles Meakin born 1844 and Alfred Meakin born 1848.

Alfred Meakin Ltd started trading in 1875 from the Royal Albert, Victoria & Highgate Potteries, in Tunstall, Staffordshire.  He died in 1904 and was succeeded by his son Alfred James, who died only four years later.

(Alfred James's uncle, Robert Johnson, bought the company for his son Stuart Johnson and it stayed in the Johnson family's hands until 1976 when it became Myott-Meakin.  They became part of the Churchill Group in 1991)
